It is possible to read this passage many times and see not much more than just a collection of facts that helps us get from one day to the next as we prepare to see Jesus go to the cross. However, as Mark records the plot to kill Jesus and his anointing in Bethany as a powerful message to his readers about who Jesus really is. The religious leaders understand, Jesus and the woman who anoints him understand, but many of his disciples, especially Judas, fail to see the importance of Jesus being the anointed one.
